Burleson Opportunity Fund

Hey there fellow youth!
The Burleson Mayor's Youth Council had an awesome opportunity to participate in the Burleson Opportunity's Fund Burleson's Rising Stars Event to raise money for the scholarships they give out to seniors. The BOF provides money for seniors in high school that can't afford college, but still want a higher education. The MYC helped stuff bags and generate publicity in the month leading up. That night, the Youth Council helped with the raffle drawings for the VIP members. In all, the event raised a little over $7000 for the Fund! It was a great opportunity and now more kids get the chance to go to college!!

What does your city do to motivate kids to go to college?

Innovative YouThinking

Hi there!
This year the Olathe Teen Council experienced some changes in its structure. We decided it would be a great idea to revise and refine a couple of concepts and try something different, with an attempt to engage more youth than ever before along the way. There are four senior high schools in the Olathe area, and this year we set a goal to have equal representation from each of the high schools in the Teen Council, including junior high, private, and home-school students. This way we hear from all types and levels of youth and gain a different perspective on the challenges we face in our hometown and ways in which to combat these. Together, in unity, we can resolve the worst of problems and come up with innovative solutions.

TAG! You're It!

Hey guys! So the past couple of months has been a huge success here in Texas! Despite the rain, the BMYC has been busy at work. In July, we volunteered in our community's Little Red Schoolhouse Drive and helped get school supplies for kids who couldn't afford them. Lots of people donated and organized the drive and it was a huge success!! In August, we helped our high school register the incoming students. This month, we are currently involved in helping with the annual Boo Bash in the downtown area! The BMYC is striving to get kids more involved in the community by getting more involved with existing programs. Our youth corps is back with a new name: TAG TEAM! And it's ready to go!

May with NLC

The month of May was a very exciting and interesting time for the NLC Council on Youth Education and Families as we met in Savannah, Georgia in order to discuss some of the pressing issues facing youth today. Some items we discussed in depth were the impact of economic climate on youth, Safe Neighborhoods, youth violence prevention, and authentic youth civic engagement. One very enlightening event that the Council participated in was a poverty simulation hosted by Step Up Savannah, in which Council members and NLC Staff had to step in the shoes of impoverished family units and navigate the mazes of job finding, social security, and more in order to “survive.” Simulations such as this one are excellent activities for youth councils and other organizations to either host or participate in. Get involved and host one in your community!!!

Tampa Mayor's Youth Corps

The City of Tampa Mayor’s Youth Corps is an influential organization made up of 9th, 10th, and 11th grade empowered, caring students selected from City of Tampa Schools who are dedicated to making community service a life-long commitment. The Corps has a voice to the mayor, leadership development and community service opportunities, as well as a monthly, youth oriented television show on CTTV. One of the most recent projects the Tampa MYC just completed was Paint Your Heart Out, an annual event where the Corps lends a helping hand to low-income, elderly citizen in our community by assisting them with much needed home repairs, painting, and landscaping. This is a great event to get started in any city! What are you doing in your community?
